James McClean - Stoke City
Stoke City's Republic of Ireland international James McClean will again not wear a Remembrance Day poppy on his shirt this year.

The 29-year-old did the same at his previous clubs - Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and West Bromwich Albion.

McClean is from Derry, where in 1972 British soldiers shot dead 13 civilian protestors during 'Bloody Sunday'.

The player said he knew many people would not agree with his decision, but asked for it to be respected.

In a statement on Tuesday, Championship club Stoke said their other players would have poppies on their shirts.

It added: "As a club we will be supporting the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal by wearing the poppy on our home shirt in the fixture against Middlesbrough on 3 November and on our away shirt in the fixture against Nottingham Forest on 10 November.

"The club is proud of its close connections with the armed forces and have also invited members of the armed forces to join our remembrance at the Middlesbrough fixture.

"However, we recognise that the poppy means different things to different individuals and communities and (like the Royal British Legion) do not believe that anybody should be forced or even pressured to wear the poppy against their free will.

"James has informed us that he will not be wearing a Remembrance Day poppy in our next two games. We respect his decision and his right to follow his own convictions."

This the only time of the year where this useless clown hits the news, he could always wear a white poppy

This comes up every year at Remembrance time.
Make of it anyway you feel about it.
He must have his reasons I just accept it and move on.

Why does this have to be news every year? Let the cunt get on with whatever he believes in.

Yeah, no mark footballer who's claim to fame is not by a footballing achievement but by not wearing a poppy on his shirt during remembrance.

The made up character with the same surname in the Die Hard films has made a better point for making a stand.

He's entitled to do that.

It's a non story.

Every year this comes out. He's explained over and over why he doesn't wear it.

Agree with him or not that's his reasons...

This is fine isn't it? I don't see a problem at all. The rest of us also choose whether to wear one or not.

I thought it was called Londonderry .

Anyway he’s just a plastic paddy stiring up stuff.

Leonard Hatred 5:57 Tue Oct 30
Re: James McClean - Stoke City
He's not a plastic.

He's a Republican Catholic from Derry.

It's perfectly understandable why he doesn't want to wear a poppy.

Re: James McClean - Stoke City
Can’t he wear a poppy in remembrance of the civilians ?

There’s been lots of conflicting reports over the Bloody Sunday incident, but I’m certain there wouldn’t have been casualties if members of the IRA hadn’t been firing live rounds to start with

Just think it's not about what we or others think is right or wrong; he can wear it or not, it's not compulsory. Personally I like the poppy tradition, but there are loads of other symbols I personally think are distasteful and wouldn't wear that others would probably die for.

It could well be a false claim, but I can’t believe they would have opened fire after copping a few bricks
